Walmart fire at Plainfield fulfillment center: What we know about massive Indiana blaze

Lincoln Wright, Indianapolis Star

March 21, 2022·8 min read

Around 1,000 employees were inside a Walmart Fulfillment Center in Plainfield, near Indianapolis, Wednesday afternoon when a fire broke out.

Crews battled the blaze as the fire sent large plumes of smoke into the air, visible from miles away.

By Friday, Plainfield Fire Territory Fire Chief Brent Anderson said the fire was out, although crews moving debris are still suppressing hot spots.

“We are working our 50th hour since this event started at about noon on Wednesday,” Anderson said.

Where is the Walmart Fulfillment Center?

The Walmart fulfillment center is in Plainfield Indiana, about 30 minutes west of downtown Indianapolis. The warehouse is located at 9590 Allpoints Parkway.

A second Walmart Fulfillment Center is located next to one that caught fire. The second building closed Wednesday and remained closed Thursday due to its proximity to the burning building.

How big was the Walmart fulfillment center in Plainfield Indiana?

The facility that caught fire is about 1.2 million square feet, about the size of 20 football fields. Fire crews had the fire contained to the first Walmart fulfillment Center building, officials said.

How many firefighters responded to the Walmart facility fire in Plainfield?

About 350 firefighters and 30 fire agencies, as well as other community partners, assisted in fighting the blaze at the 1.2-million-square-foot facility.

At the height of the fire, there were 23 engines and 13 ladders operating, according to a Facebook post from Plainfield Fire Territory.

In total, 28 engines, 25 ladders, 9 medics and 12 tankers have responded to the fire as of Friday, March 18. Some of the units responded multiple times as crews were rotated out on shifts, according to officials.

What caused the Walmart fulfillment center fire?

Officials have not confirmed what started the massive fire Wednesday afternoon. About 24 fire departments assisted the Plainfield Fire Territory in fighting the blaze, including the Indianapolis Fire Department.

“Everything was working appropriately, but this has such a heavy fire load that it overtook our crews and our ability to extinguish that fire safely,” Plainfield Fire Chief Brent Anderson said. “It sounds like there was lots of clothing in the area where the fire started, wrapped in plastic and such.”

More: ATF says it may take days or weeks to determine Plainfield Walmart fire’s cause

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is leading agency in investigating the cause of the fire, which could take weeks, Anderson said.

“ATF is doing some interviews with some employees that were on site and in the area of the fire,” Anderson said Wednesday. “Right now we have no idea what may have started this (and) no reason to believe it’s suspicious or anything. We will do our due diligence over the next coming days or weeks to figure that out.”

Crews from the fire department were doing training nearby when the fire broke out and were on the scene within three minutes of being notified, he said.

“This doesn’t happen every day, but we train for it to happen every day,” Anderson said. We were well prepared.”

Federal investigators arrived on Friday to begin on-scene investigation into the cause of the fire.

Was anyone injured in the Plainfield Walmart fulfillment center fire?

One firefighter suffered minor injuries while fighting the fire Wednesday, but was treated and released back to the scene, Plainfield Fire Chief Brent Anderson said.

The building’s fire system is what allowed all of the approximately 1,000 employees inside to evacuate the building safely, he said. No other injuries have been reported as of Thursday morning.

What was inside Plainfield’s Walmart Fulfillment Center warehouse?

Mario Cruz, who has worked in the stocking department for three years at the fulfillment center, said they stocked everything from clothing to food to electronics and that there is always a lot of cardboard inside.

What will happen to fulfillment employees?

Walmart reopened one of its fulfillment centers, which they call IND2, Monday after a fire burned down a second fulfillment center located on the same site, company spokesman Charles Crowson said in an email.

The company said it’s extending disaster benefits to employees displaced by the fire.

Last week, Walmart said those affected will be placed in temporary jobs.

The Walmart facilities were off limits to the public after the fire and employees could not retrieve vehicles or other property at the site.

Deputy Chief Joe Aldridge of the Plainfield Police Department said Wednesday it would be quite some time before the scene is released and employees can retrieve property.

Arianna Wityshyn worked at the Walmart fulfillment center for about three weeks before the fire began. The situation will be stressful for many employees of the fulfillment center, Wityshyn said.

“It’s near the end of the month and bills are starting to stack up,” Wityshyn said. “I know a lot of people who work there live paycheck to paycheck so not knowing what’s coming next is a little worrisome.”

How will online shopping be impacted by the fire at the Walmart Fulfillment Center?

Walmart expects no delays or disruptions to its online shoppers despite the shutdown of two Plainfield fulfillment centers after a fire burned one of the centers yesterday.

“We’re going to rely on the resilience of our supply chain network and calling on other fulfillment centers and stores to fulfill orders,” company spokesperson Charles Crowson told the IndyStar. “Our customers shouldn’t know any difference.”

While Walmart has a strong supply chain network that’s set up to recover from accidents, some shoppers may see slight delays or items listed as out of stock in the coming weeks, said Amrou Awaysheh, a supply chain expert at Indiana University Kelley School of Business.

How far away could smoke from the fulfillment center fire be seen?

Smoke from the Plainfield Walmart fulfillment center fire could be seen on satellite imagery as the fire grew, according to the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service tweeted out a short video of the satellite imagery showing the smoke.

Did the Walmart fire create health and environmental hazards?

The fire triggered serious concerns about air quality and toxic debris. In response, state and environmental officials have set up a monitoring network to measure both air and water impacts, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced at a Friday afternoon press conference.

More: Walmart fire leaves lingering air, water quality questions. Officials share safety tips.

The network is focused on the areas downwind from the facility where impacts would be the greatest, said Jim Mitchell with EPA. The fire began around noon Wednesday at the facility in Plainfield, about 15 miles west of downtown Indianapolis.

The EPA and Indiana Department of Environmental Management are actively monitoring the air to determine the chemicals that may be present in the smoke, Mitchell added, but at this time the main concern is fine particulate matter. There are no concerns identified with other compounds at this time, according to the EPA.

Exposure to high levels of particulate matter could cause health problems for certain individuals, including young children, the elderly or those with cardiovascular conditions such as asthma.

IDEM issued an Air Quality Action Day for Central Indiana — including Boone, Hamilton, Hendricks and Marion counties — Thursday afternoon. Such days are issued when ozone or particulate matter in the air rises above certain levels and may become unhealthy. The advisory has since expired.

How does the fire compare to other historic Central Indiana fires?

Plainfield Fire Chief Brent Anderson said Thursday that the fire at the Walmart fulfillment center was the biggest he’d seen in his 20-year career.

Other notable fires in the area include one that took place on St. Patrick’s Day in 1890.

Fire breaks out in Brownsburg

A building being constructed on farmland in Hendricks County caught fire Friday afternoon, less than 10 miles away from the Walmart fulfillment center.

The building, at Ronald Reagan Parkway and Connector Street just south of Interstate 74, has no known or announced tenants, said Danny Brock, health and safety officer and public information officer for the Brownsburg Fire Territory.

Brock said it is highly unlikely the two incidences are connected.

“It’s highly unlikely that this incident is related to the incident that happened Wednesday,” he said. “This was a construction site where the construction materials caught on fire due to the action of the contractors.”

After a weekend of exclusive parties in Washington, DC and New York City for much of the media sphere, Donald Trump held his own red carpet event at Mar-a-Lago on Wednesday night.

The former president’s Florida retreat hosted the premiere of conservative filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza’s new film 2,000 Mules that pushes baseless theories that the 2020 election was rigged against Trump.

Among the guests pictured at the event was Kyle Rittenhouse, the teenager who was ruled to be not guilty after killing two people at an anti-police protest in Kenosha, Wisconsin in August 2020.

Also in attendance were some of Trump’s top allies in Congress, GOP Reps. Marjorie Taylor GreeneMatt Gaetz, Lauren Boebert and Louie Gohmert.

Greene shared a photo on Instagram of herself at Mar-a-Lago along with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s niece Alveda King.

It’s not clear if Greene and Boebert spoke at the event, after it was reported last week that they had an argument so explosive that it had to be broken up by another House GOP colleague.

Former Trump administration senior aide Kellyanne Conway and ex-deputy Press Secretary Hogan Gidley were also in attendance.

Gidley had previously attended the White House Correspondents Dinner in Washington on Saturday night, after which a number of journalists and officials have already tested positive for COVID-19.

Pro-Trump celebrities like Kevin Sorbo and Kristy Swanson were also pictured at the premiere, as was the ex-president’s former lawyers Rudy Giuliani and Jenna Ellis.

The former president's West Palm Beach resort played host to the premiere of Dinesh D'Souza's new film pushing 2020 election fraud conspiracy theories

A video of Trump arriving at the elaborate event was posted on Instagram by conservative activist David Harris Jr.

‘This man – not only is he a fighter, not only does he never back down, but he’s smart,’ a woman’s voice can be heard saying as the room focuses on the former president.

‘He warned us about Biden being a Trojan Horse for the left. He warned us about the border, he warned us about foreign policy, and he warned us about voter fraud and he warned us about mail-in ballots.’

She continued, ‘He has always been right. Please join me in welcoming the 45th President of the United States, Donald J. Trump.’

The room erupted into applause and chants of ‘USA’ as Trump approached the stage.

Another clip, this time of Trump speaking in front of an enthusiastic and formally-dressed crowd, shows the former president rehashing his same complaints about the previous election.

‘We have to do something that’s very important. We have to go to voter ID immediately,’ Trump said as the room applauded approvingly.

‘They don’t want voter ID. There’s only one reason not to want voter ID – it’s because you want to cheat.’

He continued, ‘You know, when you went to the Democrat National Convention, you had a voter ID that was the size of most people’s chests. Large people. Large, large people. The thing was like, hung around — they needed the chain.’

Donald J. Trump

Trump gestured around his neck. It’s not clear what he was referring to.

‘You walk in, it had your picture, it had fingerprints, it had your everything. It probably had your social security number on it even though you’re not supposed to have that,’ he continued.

‘But you know what, it was the greatest voter ID I’ve ever seen. But when it comes to voting in the election, they don’t want that, because they wanna cheat. And you know what? I said it, and I’ve been saying it a lot lately, I don’t believe they’re a 50-50 party. I think they cheat in elections.’

The former president then accused Democrats of being ‘against oil, guns and god.’

It’s not clear if any of the former president’s children attended the red carpet event, though his son Donald Trump Jr.’s fiancée Kimberly Guilfoyle was pictured chatting with other guests.

Trump Jr. had reportedly testified in front of the House Select Committee investigating the January 6 Capitol attack earlier that same day.

Another video of the event shows former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn hawking products with conservative activist David Harris Jr
Michael Flynn

He spoke with the Democrat-led panel remotely and was reportedly at least somewhat cooperative.

The committee’s investigation has been rapidly honing in on the former president’s role in fomenting the insurrection last year and his and his allies’ attempts to overturn the 2020 election results.

Another video from the event also posted by Harris appears to be selling right-wing novelty products from his site — featuring ex-Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn.

‘I love this, where can I get a deck of these?’ Flynn says holding up playing cards.

The Joker card is superimposed with an image of President Joe Biden’s face.

‘You got the name wrong, it’s Brandon,’ Flynn quipped in reference to the ‘Let’s Go Brandon’ phrase adopted by the right wing to mock Biden.

Another Joker card features Dr. Anthony Fauci with ‘five masks,’ according to the person recording the video.

‘This is Brandon minus. This is the cousin – the lesser cousin of Brandon,’ Flynn said.

NEW Controlled Food System Is Now In Place And They Will Stop At Nothing To Accelerate Their Control

NEW Controlled Food System Is Now In Place And They Will Stop At Nothing To Accelerate Their Control

“Who controls the food supply controls the people; who controls the energy can control whole continents; who controls money can control the world.” This famous quote by Henry Kissinger is ringing more and more true by the week. The globalists already control the majority of the money, are moving ever so swiftly to convert the energy system over into systems they are all invested in, and have been taking drastic measures to control the food industry while running much of it under the radar. If they control the seeds they control the food, and if they control the food they can use the digital ID to control consumer access to the food. While a rash of fires suddenly destroy food processing, meat, and fertilizer plants, during a time where farmers are hurting and supply chain issues are kicking in, an entire traceable food infrastructure system has already been built in multiple cities and is making its way across the globe.

Imagine a day where farmers markets no longer exist, you can’t drive over to your local farmer to buy produce or cuts of meat, and the only food growing outside of the globalists secured indoor vertical farming and lab grown meat facilities, is in your windowsill, garden, or greenhouse.

• The indoor vertical farming industry was valued at $5.5 billion in 2020 and is projected to reach $19.86 billion by 2026. Urban indoor farming controlled by the globalists is the future of food they have reimagined, and it’s already in thousands of grocery stores without people realizing it. Whereas the U.S. is leading in this industry, this is a global agenda with vertical farms popping up across the globe.

• For perspective, Bowery Farming’s new facility in Alexandria, TX will be able to serve 16 million people in a 200-mile radius. This is only one of dozens of vertical farming companies with massive facilities across the country, backed by big investors.

• AeroFarms, who has the largest indoor vertical farming facility in the world, co-developed the first CRISPR-Cas9 gene-edited produce product, now hundreds are following, while National Geographic believes that gene editing is the next food revolution. AeroFarms also worked on an NIH sponsored trial to produce proteins for the Covid jabs.

• The University of California is developing a plant-based mRNA vaccine in the hopes that farms can grow edible vaccine heads of lettuce.

• Monsanto/Bayer is creating gene edited seeds for vertical farm companies, while Bill Gates, the Rockefeller and Ford Foundations, and the World Bank control 10% of the world’s germplasms and hold some of the world’s largest seed banks. Bayer and BASF, two of the world’s largest suppliers of seed, are both involved with the vertical farm industry.

• The USDA and FDA have already approved lab grown meat, genetically modified cattle, and are funding the globalists to research and develop cellular agriculture as well as indoor growers and genetics companies, while they slack on regulations for gene-edited produce.

• Well over a dozen major food processing and meat plants have coincidentally gone up in flames in the past several months.

• Union Pacific is mandating railroad shipping reductions by 20%, impacting CF Industries Holdings, the world’s largest fertilizer company. Vanguard, BlackRock, and State Street happen to be the top shareholders of Union Pacific, and BlackRock and Vanguard are in the top 3 shareholders of CF Industries Holdings.

• By mapping some of the biggest vertical farms (below in this report), it reveals the crops, grocery stores involved, locations, and billions pouring in by globalist investors and shareholders. It quickly becomes evident that this is the global plan to control all produce – ingredients that go into all food products.

How Did They Lock This in Under The Radar? Some Critical Points:

The food industry is already monopolized by 10 companies, the majority of which include Vanguard and BlackRock as top shareholders. What happens when they control all of the seeds, produce, and meat too? What happens when produce and meat are all grown inside secured facilities after a gene splice or inside a petri dish, and farmland becomes dormant due to overreaching regulations, lack of supplies, and manufactured inflation?

Taliban leader orders women to wear all-covering burqa in public: Decree

Afghanistan’s supreme leader and Taliban chief on Saturday ordered the country’s women to wear the all-covering burqa in public – one of the harshest controls imposed on women’s lives since the Taliban seized power.

“They should wear a chadori (head-to-toe burqa) as it is traditional and respectful,” said a decree issued by Hibatullah Akhundzada that was released by Taliban authorities at a function in Kabul.

For the latest headlines, follow our Google News channel online or via the app.

“Those women who are not too old or young must cover their face, except the eyes, as per sharia directives, in order to avoid provocation when meeting men who are not mahram (adult close male relatives),” the decree said.

It added that if women had no important work outside it was “better they stay at home.”

During their first regime between 1996 and 2001, the Taliban imposed similar restrictions on women.

US Firms Report Huge Dip in China Sales as Beijing Continues ‘Zero-COVID’ Measures

Several major companies, including Starbucks, Apple, Estee Lauder, and other U.S.-listed companies have warned in quarterly earnings reports that China’s “zero-COVID” controls will severely drag down profit and impact business.

International companies have faced a number of operational challenges in China, and the recent tightening of pandemic restrictions will only continue that trend. According to Bank of America’s proprietary model, S&P 500 companies in China have fallen to the lowest since the second quarter of 2020.

Since mid-March, China has been battling an outbreak of the highly transmissible Omicron variant by enacting swift lockdowns and travel restrictions across its major cities. Health authorities have logged over 15,000 daily new infections of COVID-19 since April, with the country reporting 12,939 positive cases on May 5.

Starbucks and Apple both reported a decrease in same-store sales of over 20 percent — far worse than the 0.2 percent decrease analysts expected, according to FactSet. Starbucks said its in-person sales had gone down by 23 percent since the lockdowns in Shanghai began.

“Conditions in China are such that we have virtually no ability to predict our performance in China in the back half of the year,” Starbucks Interim CEO Howard Schultz said

The coffee giant suspended its guidance for the rest of the fiscal year, or the remaining two quarters. However, Starbucks said it still expected its business dealings in China to grow larger than its homegrown U.S. audience in the long term.

Despite nearly all its final assembly plants in Shanghai being given the green light to restart production, Apple said the lockdowns would likely impact sales in the current quarter from $4 billion to $8 billion — a “substantially” higher number compared to the last quarter. The other factor affecting sales is the ongoing chip shortage, Apple executives said during an earnings call on April 28.

The effects from China’s lockdowns in Shanghai, and now Beijing, have exacerbated the decline in semiconductor imports by over 5 percent in the first two months of 2022 during a global chip shortage.

“Covid is difficult to predict,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said after describing those estimated costs, according to a transcript from the call obtained by StreetAccount.

Apple also blamed ongoing COVID-19 disruptions for affecting consumer demand in China.

Beijing tightens restrictions

Authorities in China’s capital announced Friday, May 6, that all non-essential services in its sprawling district of Chaoyang, home to embassies and large offices, would close until further notice. Mass testing will also resume in at least four districts over the weekend.

Unlike other countries, which have loosened their controversial pandemic restrictions, the Chinese authorities have doubled down on their ruinous zero-tolerance approach. The latest lockdown in Shanghai was brought on at the end of March as health experts using a more targeted anti-epidemic regime were apparently sidelined in favor of the draconian “zero-COVID” policy.

Meanwhile, organizers of the Asian Games, originally scheduled to take place in the eastern city of Hangzhou in September, also announced today that the event would be postponed until 2023 due to COVID restrictions.

“We will try to cooperate,” Hu, a 42-year-old finance professional from Beijing told Reuters

“But I also hope that the government can introduce some policies that will not affect the overall life of citizens. After all, we all have mortgages and car loans,” Hu, who gave only her surname in fear of retaliation from the government, said.

Beijing authorities are scrambling to avoid an explosion in cases like the one that forced the financial hub of Shanghai into complete lockdown for over a month, resulting in severe losses to its financial and economic sectors as most stores and businesses were forced to remain closed for weeks on end.

The prolonged lockdowns also negatively impacted the psychological health of its residents, with some committing suicide by jumping off rooftops as they reached their breaking point, and others starving to death after completely running out of food and water, and unable to leave their homes to procure more.

Recently, Shanghai appeared to ease some restrictions, allowing an estimated 4 million people to leave their homes. However, as new infections continued being found, authorities again tightened restrictions in certain areas, notifying residents that the lockdowns would continue until the virus is ”fully brought under control.”

After the Standing Committee of the Communist Party’s Politburo held a quarterly economic meeting on April 28, Chinese state media reported Wednesday that China would fight any comment or action that “distorted, doubted or repudiated” its “zero-COVID” policy.

The Politburo, the top-ruling body of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), saw its 25 members, including leader Xi Jinping, vow to speed up the implementation of existing tax-cut and supportive policies, as well as the introduction of new monetary policy tools to enhance investments during the fiscal meeting.

According to a statement released after the meeting, new regulatory policies for several industries were also revealed, with tech giants Alibaba and Tencent hoping they will be greeted with good news ahead of next month’s regulatory meeting with the country’s tech sector.

“We must insist on the policies of preventing both inbound infections and a domestic rebound of cases, and [adhere to] dynamic Zero-Covid, doing our best to protect people’s lives and minimize its impact on the national economy and society,” the statement said.

Relaxing COVID controls, however, which are in place in dozens of cities across the world’s second-largest economy, would lead to large-scale infections, it warned.
